This was a program coordinated by the Kid’s Power of Produce Club @ The Muskegon Farmers Market.  It was a 2 hour event held on two days (July 25th and 27th)  with Chef Char Morse who works with Kitchen 242 to offer kids cooking classes.  Nineteen kids (ages 7-13) enrolled in the camp this year and six of those were able to attend because of scholarships that we offered after receiving a $250 mini-grant from the Margaret Shaw Memorial Fund (MSMF) of the Community Foundation of Muskegon County.  This was the first year for this camp so we were pleased that we were at capacity for this camp and we learned that we need to keep it to 12 maximum!

The first day the kids learned about shopping at the Muskegon Farmers Market and tokens were provided for them to purchase ingredients to make frozen ice pops from watermelon puree. They also then learned about growing their own food and planted one or two pots with seed that they could take home; one of the options was green beans that could still be grown and harvested this season.  At the market the kids purchased watermelons and various fruit for ingredients to make ice pops that went into the freezer so they could eat on Thursday when they returned.

The second day was spent shopping at the Muskegon Farmers Market.  Tokens were used to purchase all kinds of fruits and vegetables and they then proceeded back to Kitchen 242 where kids spiralized, chopped and cooked  the vegetables and made Garlic Shrimp Noodles  (noodles were made from zucchini  and summer squash mostly) for their lunch and then had plenty to take home with them also.

We learned a great deal from this first year and hope to offer it again in 2018, maybe event twice.  Thank you to the Margaret Shaw Memorial Fund and the Community Foundation for Muskegon County #cffmc for supporting this program.

Also a shout out to #FlowersbyRayandSharon for donating the pots for the kids to use for planting.
